The History of Reiki
Reiki is a powerful and deeply spiritual healing practice that has transformed lives around the world. While many people are familiar with Reiki as a modern energy healing modality, its roots extend far beyond its formal introduction in Japan.
Understanding the history of Usui Reiki not only deepens your connection to the practice, but also reveals the rich spiritual lineage and mystery behind this sacred healing art.
What is Usui Reiki?
Usui Reiki, also known as the Usui System of Natural Healing, is a Japanese energy healing modality developed in the early 20th century by Dr. Mikao Usui.
The word Reiki translates to:
“Rei”– Universal or spiritual wisdom
“Ki”– Life force energy
Together, Reiki refers to universal life force energy that flows through all living things.
How Dr. Usui Discovered Reiki
The story of how Reiki was discovered is one of the most fascinating aspects of its history.
According to historical records and teachings passed down through Reiki lineages, Dr. Usui was on a lifelong spiritual quest to understand healing. This journey led him to study various disciplines, including Buddhism, meditation practices, medicine and psychology, and spiritual texts from different traditions.
In 1922, Dr. Usui undertook a 21-day meditation and fasting retreat on Mount Kurama in Japan. At the end of this spiritual practice, he experienced a profound awakening.
He reported feeling a powerful energy enter through the crown of his head—an experience that awakened his ability to channel healing energy. Soon after, he discovered his body could heal itself, he could facilitate healing in others and this energy could be taught and shared.
This moment marked the birth of what we now know as Usui Reiki.
The Spread of Usui Reiki
After his awakening, Dr. Usui began teaching and sharing Reiki with others. In 1922, he founded the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (Usui Reiki Healing Method Society) in Tokyo.
He trained over 2,000 students and developed a structured system of healing that included energy healing techniques, spiritual principles (The Reiki Precepts), and attunements to activate the flow of energy.
Following his passing in 1926, Reiki continued through his students and eventually spread worldwide.
Why There Are Many Versions of Reiki History
One of the most important (and often overlooked) aspects of Reiki’s history is that Dr. Usui primarily taught Reiki verbally. Because of this, much of Reiki’s early history was not formally documented, teachings were passed from teacher to student and stories evolved over time. This has led to multiple versions of Reiki’s origin story, much like a game of telephone, where details shift as they are retold.
Even today, different Reiki lineages may share slightly different accounts of Dr. Usui’s background, his spiritual journey and how Reiki was discovered. This doesn’t diminish Reiki—it adds to its mystique, depth, and living tradition.
Reiki Before Usui: Earlier Healing Systems
Although Dr. Usui is credited with developing the modern Reiki system, he did not necessarily create energy healing itself. In fact, research shows that other Reiki-like healing systems existed in Japan prior to Usui’s work.
This suggests that Reiki is part of a broader tradition of energy healing that spans cultures and centuries.
The Tibetan Connection: Ancient Roots of Reiki
Many Reiki practitioners and traditions acknowledge a connection between Reiki and ancient Tibetan healing practices. Energy healing systems similar to Reiki existed in Tibet thousands of years ago and these practices were rooted in Buddhist and spiritual energy work traditions. Knowledge of these systems may have influenced Dr. Usui’s spiritual studies including breathwork practices which are rooted in Tibetan traditions.
Some historical perspectives trace Reiki-like healing methods back several thousand years to ancient Tibet, suggesting that Usui may have rediscovered or reawakened an existing form of energy healing rather than creating something entirely new.
While the exact connection between Reiki and Tibetan practices is still debated, it highlights an important truth:
Energy healing is ancient, universal, and deeply interconnected across cultures.
Usui Reiki as a Spiritual Practice
Dr. Usui did not intend Reiki to be just a healing technique—it was a spiritual path. At its core, Reiki is about personal growth, inner peace, alignment with universal energy, and l iving with intention and mindfulness.
This is reflected in the Reiki Principles, which guide practitioners toward a more balanced and harmonious life.
A Living, Evolving Tradition
The history of Usui Reiki is not a fixed story—it is a living tradition that continues to evolve. Reiki remains a powerful bridge between ancient wisdom and present-day healing. Whether you view Reiki as a discovery, a rediscovery, or a divine gift, one thing is certain:
Reiki continues to guide, heal, and transform those who are open to its energy.
